Ameriški predstavniki so pozdravili pripravljenost jordanskega kralja Abdulaha, da je Jordanija pripravljena postati prva arabska država, ki bi poslala vojake v Irak, če bi jo za to zaprosila nova iraška vlada. V pogovoru za BBC je opozoril, da so največji problem Iraka slabe varnostne razmere. "Če nas bodo Iračani, zdaj ko ima Irak prehodno vlado in, upam, neodvisnost, neposredno zaprosili za pomoč, bomo zelo težko rekli ne. Moje sporočilo iraškemu predsedniku in premieru je, da jim bomo ponudili 110-odstotno pomoč," je dejal. Američani menijo, da je to dokaz jordanske podpore novim iraškim oblastem, ne pa pomoč ZDA.

Especially Likely Sloth
I just listened to one of the craziest CDs I've ever heard (and if you've seen my CD collection, you know that's an impressive feat). Especially Likely Sloth's album "But If What He'll What Ant" starts off like Rodney Alan Greenblat songs on 78rpm, but quickly whirls off into utter insanity. Imagine if The Locust were magically transformed into happy sugar sprites, and wrote funky flea circus music. You still wouldn't come close to how weird this disc is.

Very Special Issue
Issue 13 of McSweeney's is a huge tome devoted to comics, edited by Chris Ware. It includes work by such greats as Kaz, R. Crumb, Lynda Barry, Daniel Clowes, Charles Burns, Gary Panter, Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez, and lots more.
The overarching theme in the art and essays seems to be how comic artists are basically self-loathing outsiders. The preface by Ira Glass has a good analysis of the lasting legacy of Charles Schulz's Peanuts:
"I don't remember ever thinking they were funny. Who ever laughed at Peanuts? I thought of myself as a loser and a loner and Peanuts helped me take comfort in that."
If the book isn't enough, there are extra goodies to enjoy. Two mini-comix, including what may be Ron Rege Jr's finest and most moving work. The dust jacket is actually a large, complex fold-out, designed by Chris Ware to look like the Sunday funnies. Ware fans will have to get this issue for that alone, and in fact the by-line reads "Included with this paper: a FREE 264 page hardcover." Ha!

New Movements in Music
The always-inventive Dave Soldier of Mulatta Records has been organizing plenty of new musical experiments. Check out his personal page for MP3s of East Harlem school kids making their own hip hop tracks. And definitely listen to Three Zebra Finches, a recording of songbirds chirping and triggering samples with their beaks - it's hilarious. Someone needs to make an animation for that track.

The news last week that IBM had challenged its internal tech team to roll out desktop Linux throughout the organisation by the end of 2005 seemed like a real shot in the arm for the whole open-source-client alternative to Microsoft -- right up to the point when IBM began back-tracking faster than Tony Blair discussing Ken Livingstone.
A November memo from CIO Bob Greenberg, leaked to the Inquirer news site, reportedly said IBM chairman Sam Palmisano had "challenged the IT organisation, and indeed all of IBM, to move to a Linux-based desktop before the end of 2005." But in a furious bit of spin management, IBM spokeswoman Trink Guarino jumped all over the story and said that IBM was merely evaluating the idea of desktop Linux. "IBM has no plans to move all of its employees to Linux desktops by 2005," or even a majority of them, she said.
